Edgewater Escarpment

The escarpment is the steep land forming the descent to the Maribyrnong River flats. On this former defence land, Delfin Lend Lease over a period of time has developed a wonderful medium density development with scenic and green environment west of the Flemington racecourse and north of Victoria University in Maribyrnong.

PGA has been engaged as project engineers for design and contract administration of several stages on the escarpment.

Features of the design include—

• The steepness of the land and safety features for down-hill road sections;
• The variability of the underlying geological formations;
• The required heights of retaining walls so that each terraced medium density dwelling has a view of the central city of Melbourne;
• Narrow owner corporation roads with limited space for services and consideration of turning into either ground level or top-loading garages;
• Coordination of road works with retaining walls and building operations by Lend Lease;
• Drainage management through the site.
